paging sister christine.

hey sister. did you sign up for all manner of ring- and call-tones from sprint? because i think our lists getting switched is the only plausible explanation for the fact that my phone keeps insisting on reverting back to a john mayer calltone that i never ordered.

it really confuses the hell out of mom.

[update: it wasn't my sister who was responsible at all. so now i'm truly confused. sprint tells me it "must be a prank." hmph! whoever you are, you must think you're sooooo clever downloading all this crap music (james blunt! john mayer! shoot me) to my cell phone. i'll get you! (shakes fist)]

so cute i think i just wet myself.

check out this ADORABLE belle and sebastian shirt for the baby in your life.

spoon gets some cash money.

...and i couldn't be happier about it. the long-held opinion in the manicmess household is that they're the most underrated band in america. or one of them, anyway. so we were thrilled to see the new jaguar commercial featuring 'i turn my camera on'. even if it is kind of random.

then last night, the song was also featured on the bravo show 'top chef'. hooray!

in related news, douchebag of the week award goes to. . .aspiring top chef stephen!

Btn_asprinio

maybe you don't watch the show. he's probably the most annoying, pretentious, uptight squirt of a guy ever to grace tv. it's worth tuning in if only to give yourself a new concept of just how much more skin-crawlingly awful the people you live/work/cope with could actually be...they could be him. i hope he never gets an actual restaurant because eating there would take all the joy out of eating and drinking. my two favorite pastimes.

anyway. what have i been doing? it's easter week, which means i'm scurrying about preparing to go home for the long weekend. i did manage to squeeze in reviews for the new albums from ll cool j and built to spill though, which is good. i should have given ll a lower grade. the album's pretty terrible.

dance dance dance!

every couple of years the city tries to raid clubs and bust people for dancing and doing clubs. i've always found this to be a tremendous waste of energy and money. and now i have the evidence! from tricia romano's article:

"According to spokesperson MAGGIE GANDASEQUI of the special narcotics prosecutors' office, seven people were arrested and indicted stemming from the club busts. Browne says the city spent $34,465 purchasing 528 grams of meth and 258 Ecstasy pills inside locations. (It was not clear if this included the total of 1,006 locations in the city that have been closed or received restraining orders since January 2005)."

i'm so pleased they spent more than many people make in a year on drugs they aren't even going to do.

but anyway. what a boring week. someone invite me to something!! the following is seriously all i can find...

ps. on sunday night boyfriend john and i went to pravda's tenth anniversary party, and i seriously can't BELIEVE we didn't bring a camera! they had violin players with giant bear heads, dancing russian girls, and a 700-POUND ICE LUGE. seriously. not to mention the fact that we spent about 40 bucks to eat tons of caviar and have three drinks each. you totally should have come. i posted the invite and everything! what does it take to get you people to leave the house?

will you think i'm the biggest loser in the world if i tell you i just gave back my raconteurs spot for tonight?

because i totally did.

last night boyfriend john and i were supposed to go see gorillaz at the apollo, but everything got mangled and our entire group's guest list spots were lost. totally sucked. we were briefly bummed but rallied in time for the afterparty at marquee (i'm told the one the night before was at guest house). it was a ridiculously awesome party. james murphy was DJing, so we took his picture.

Jamesmurphy_1

the place was totally jam-packed when we got there and there were so many people jockeying for spots at the gorillaz' table that we could barely get a seat. after a couple of vodka tonics i decided i wanted to sit on top of a banquette but the only open spot was next to a mildly unhappy-looking woman who i wasn't sure would want me all squeezed up next to her. so i grabbed a rose and gave it to her to make friends. it worked! so i cuddled up next to her and guess who she turned out to be? trugoy's sister! how'd i know? because a couple of minutes later de la soul showed up! john just about lost his mind. of course there was no way we were going to ask pasdnuos if we could take his picture, although we contemplated ambushing him when we saw him outside. happily, we decided against it.

the best part of the story is that the reason we had the rose in the first place was that it had been given to our friend jackie by neneh cherry. you seriously couldn't make this stuff up.

so...the long and short of it is that we raged waaaay too hard for a weeknight and now tonight is begging to be spent lying in bed watching law & order reruns. i can't hardly wait.

happy weekend!

[update: check out this guy's recap of the party. he took pictures with all the people i was too lame to ask to pose with me. bastard! (via brooklynvegan)]

the awesomest email i've gotten all week.

...was the one from my friend kellie that included this photo. for obvious reasons.

Mikejones

and no...

i don't know a thing about the secret raconteurs show. feel like i'm losing the edge i never had.

dudes.

it's totally snowing! what happened to the pretty?

in other news, if you're a music writer than you know all about the hassle of receiving an advance copy of a CD that's copy-protected. copy-protecting makes sense in theory, but the CDs are a total pain in the ass for would-be reviewers who don't have stereos, because they don't play in computers.

this week, i got a copy of an album that i didn't realize was copy-protected until i sat down to listen to it. when it wouldn't play in my computer i flew into a total panic (as i'm wont to do) because my review was due at 10am the next day (NOOOOOO!). at which point, my genius boyfriend set up finding ways to make it play. after failing to do so for about an hour, the skies suddenly opened and my computer starting blasting the new ll!

how'd he do it? by using this little sucker. you still can't copy the album, but at least you can HEAR it. so, just sharing the wealth.

happy (miserable) wednesday.

some ways to get yourself through the week.
