but it's ok because there are lots of things happening. so even though i'm supposed to be interviewing some bikram guru (snore) i'm going to talk about them instead! take that, editors!
first of all, the pixies just released their first song in like decades, and it's called bam thwok. you can buy it from itunes.
in other news, drunk john is heavily into this band beulah, so i got to listen to them on the way home from coachella. they're sweet. but apparently, they're breaking up. they will be playing their last show ever on august 5th, as part of the music at castle clinton series at battery park.
as for this past weekend, the festivities were so many and varied that it was hard to keep up. friday night we hit up the sweet action party at m1-5 in tribeca to hear diamonds. they were muuuuuch better this time than they were at the sin-e show and it was a good time. they don't look like eighth graders in real life, although they do in these pictures.
they play urgent classic rock and the singer, morgan, has an awesome voice.
after that we wandered to jesse's house to meet up with peeps...
...on our way to trash at rififi. it was waaaay crowded so we didn't stay too long. met up with loveinwar bryan and the boys from moustache mcfadden (who are doing shows every sunday this month at the people's improv theater and you should GO because they are absolutely pee-your-pants hysterical) and we all went to black and white, where jr was spinning and we saw jo (who put her hand over her face AGAIN) and juliet.
stayed out too late, drank too much, surprise surprise. then on saturday was the big shout! 7th anniversary show at bowery ballroom, which i understand was somewhat under-attended. i wouldn't know though because i went straight to the afterparty at the delancey. good party, but my new reason for hating the delancey is that all the pictures i take there come out like shite! (see this one:
...if you don't believe me.)
later on we ran into hidy, meghan, and lane (and someone's hand, apparently), which was a pleasant surprise.
and then when we were smoking outside a white stretch limo pulled up and someone emptied a bag of gross delancey street trash all over it. of course by the time i had my camera out and on they were already pulling away...
and then we went home. in a related note, the new york times did one of their kids these days!' charticles about--that's right--the delancey. i love when they refer to the people who drink at the delancey as "taste-makers". will they ever learn?
anyway, on sunday i was supposed to go to the shout party at bar 13, but i was too sleepy. apparently the big secret band was the soft parade playing doors covers, so i didn't miss much. but later that night as we were dutifully reading the longass elliott smith story in the music issue of dave egger's the believer, we were astonished to find a reference to hightower! and not just that: it was a three-paragraph anecdote about how he made the elliott smith tribute in tomkins square park an uplifting and inspiring experience for all involved. and later in the story the writer used the phrase "hightower, being hightower". so awesome! here's jm being all excited when he saw hightower's name. because they're friends and stuff. [ed. note: it has been called to my attention that this post doesn't make clear that hightower is actually NOT somebody famous. he's just a guy who goes by the name hightower. thus the excitement. oh yeah, and jm would like me to note that this is actually a still from platoon.]
and if that doesn't make you want to meet hightower, seeing his band, the doc marshalls, will. they're playing for free tomorrow night (6/16) at the rodeo bar at 10pm, and you should go. i'm told they incorporate a cajun accordian and a washboard, if that's any incentive.
and tonight, once again, is the bluesparks ep release party at sin-e. it's gonna be a big fucking party. so come.
