friday night we trekked out to hoboken to hear the fever play at maxwell's. i'd never been to maxwell's before and it kind of felt like going to see a show at tgi fridays. still, i liked that it wasn't obnoxious and hipster'ed out and tired. the fever came on and rocked it, although they were better the next day at siren. my pictures suck too, because the lighting was disgusting. enjoy!
geremy and pony.
and here's a random photo that *someone* i know thinks is the best of the lot.
aww. jay fever, caroline, and john martin getting freak-ay after the show.
we stumbled home and went to bed to prepare ourselves for the siren festival on saturday. they really know how to treat the press there. free beer for everybody! ROCK. here's some pictures of the fever's set on the stilwell stage.
after they were finished we ran out for more beers and made it back just in time for electric six. i seem to be the only person on the planet who hasn't seem them like a million times. in fact, i'd never seen them before siren fest. my first impression was that they were a little too, well, old to be rocking out all h&m-style and mtv-like. but after hearing a couple of songs i decided that they were amusing, at the very least. they played that danger! danger! song and i can't remember what else. i do remember that the singer is a spazz. he kept dancing. . .
while they were playing, we decided that this guitarist (one of two) was cute. now that i'm sober, i'm not so sure.
anyway, once we got tired of all the commotion, we went up to the boardwalk for food, where we ran into. . .peter and phil! (seen here, flanking jo divestar.
then i made jo fake-pose in the foreground so i could take a photo of this guy, who was sitting in a chair in the vip tent so zonked that all of his hardcoreness was totally negated. his eyes were completely unfocused and his beer was almost falling out of his hand. i'm not sure this photo does him justice.
then it was finally time for mission of burma. they KILLED. i'm so, so happy to have gotten the chance to see them. here's a photo of roger miller. he has to wear sound-blocking headphones to protect his poor ears. :(
i tried to take one of the drummer, but he has to play behind plexiglass due to roger miller's ear thing, so it didn't really work out.
the best part about mission of burma is that not only did they play an awesome set, but they were also the nicest guys ever. they wandered around in the crowd and were totally sweet whenever fans stopped them to shake hands, exchange love letters, etc. they were even nice to jm when he was *this* drunk:
i hate to single john out though, because the truth is that everyone there was raging pretty hard. as evidenced by the following...
i was too wasted to remember to snap a shot of the bleached-out coney island wastoid who harassed me at the beer stand ("are you suicidal or a cokehead? or both? get wasted! WOOHOO!") but i had the presence of mind to take this awesome one of the view through the vip tent banner. i think someone should make it into a flyer.
by the time trail of the dead came on, we were getting overly drunk and tired, but they put on a good show. there are too many people in trail of the dead and i can't keep track of who's who. but here's some photos.
here's the vocalist guy singing...
. . .and jumping off a speaker!
shit got kind of crazy after that, as they threatened to douse the crowd with about ten tons of water, so we scurried to catch the subway back to manhattan. and that was the end of a very lovely siren festival.
my fingers are getting very tired of all this typing, so although i have some very ridiculous pictures from shout on sunday (skanky girls harassing singers and threatening to bring mayhem to peace-loving scenesters!), i'm going to hold off on posting. for now, tonight at rothko there is a decent lineup of bands playing, including snowden and the twenty-two's. i won't be there because i'm going to be partying with the kids from sup magazine at the soho grand. speaking of which/whom, pick up a copy of the new issue at other music or kim's if you get a chance. it's pretty kickass. and pick me up a copy while you're at it because i still ain't got one even though i wrote for that shit.
what else. this week i started getting emails from labtonic, a company that puts together a weekly newsletter in which bold-faced names in fashion, design, or the arts tell you what music they've been listening to. this week's featured artist was ryan mcguiness and it was actually pretty interesting (he listed a ton of smiths covers that i never even knew existed). i think you can subscribe to the list by emailing [email protected].
oh, and have you heard the new hives album yet? if you've already written them off based on their first album (like i have) you'll be pleasantly surprised.
