as i was looking through my emails and flyers this morning, i realized that this is actually shaping up to be a lovely week! such a nice respite from the summer doldrums.
last night, cornerstone promotions threw a dope party at drive-in studios, a really nice venue that i'd never been to before. everyone was happily buzzing along thanks to the free rum and beer, and all the seriously annoying people were at the killers show downtown. anyway, i caught the bravery (my second time seeing them) and was again struck by what a lame group of formulaic poseurs they are. you could even call them wannabe killers, which, even though i like the killers, is hardly a compliment. ted leo and the pharmacists came on next. i like their music because it is happy and poppy and they are always fun to see live. unfortunately i was feeling fluish and had to leave before the libertines came on. c'est dommage. i saw about ten bloggers there though, so i'm sure someone will have a review and pics. . .
the politically-minded howl festival kicks off today on the lower east side, featuring performances and parties and screenings of documentaries like the life and times of allen ginsburg.
this thursday, i'll be at the guided by voices show at pier 17, along with everyone else and their respective mothers. the after party/record release party is at the tonic (107 norfolk). i'm told there will be guided by voices karaoke. ridiculous.
if for some strange reason you're not attending the GBV show (it's free, did i mention that?), kooky songstress nellie mckay is playing a free show at the delacourt theater, which is in central park somewhere around 80th street. there's also this art opening at the 3 more gallery in brooklyn:
and the fun continues this weekend! the new ramones movie opens this friday at the angelika. also on friday, there's an art opening downtown which features t-shirts made by artists whom the gallery asked to reimagine their art as fashion...
and on sunday, the perfect way to relax after the hard weekend is to chill in tomkins square park, where they'll be playing jazz from 3pm on, as part of the charlie parker jazz festival. like i said, lovely.
and finally, here are some random shots from this past weekend which was jam-packed with 'i love new york' moments. i saw...
an awesome walk sign on rivington street that was tripped out to look like a b-boy with a boombox.
...and a billboard on canal street that was not only upside down but backward. yam yadnus!
i had a dimsum with my friend leo at a huge chinese food palace.
and i went shopping in soho...
...and i ate lots of pork.
the end!
