FINALLY. this week has been interminable and i am desperately in need of some r & r. hooray!
last night i hit the mercury lounge for the tarantula record release party. for some reason i'd never seen them play before and i was really impressed. i'd always figured that they weren't really my style—an orchestral trio that crafts "landscapes of sound"?—but i was wrong. they were pretty awesome. there's only three of them (one plays violin and cello, one's on drums, and the other plays a double guitar/bass) but they create this incredibly heavy, lush, gothic music that's somewhere between classical and metal, and it's the kind of music that just takes over the room and turns it into a weird, surreal space. furthermore, the cellist is absolutely SICK. so, so good at it.
their record is out now on kemado.
on an unrelated note, my friend drunk john is famous! a little background: as a law school student at Berkeley last year, he mobilized a bunch of cute girls and formed a giant OC fan club that's gotten all kinds of press, in addition to putting out dope one-of-a-kind OC fan club t-shirts (i have three). not content to stop there, he then put all of this newfound muscle into creating an fellowship (the Sandy Cohen fellowship, naturally) that would be bestowed upon some deserving student seeking to be a public defender. and this led to all kinds of buddy-buddy time with john and peter "sandy cohen" gallagher when peter came to town to present the award.
true story. anyway, today you can see a clip of the whole thing on fox's OC website. hi-larious.
let's see. . .the hold steady are shooting a video this saturday in brooklyn, and everyone's invited to participate. more on that here.
my officemate jada just emailed me that diamond nights' ridiculously kickass single 'the girl's attractive' was featured on the season finale of alias last night! holy SHIT! all i can say is it's about bloody time.
oh, and now you, me, and everyone else can get anime eyes. those crazy japanese! what will they think of next?
oops. i should have watched till the end of my alias tape. was just too thrilled about the diamonds appearance to notice that the story continues.
season finale is this coming wednesday. what i saw was a candy-ass prequel to the end of the world. sigh.
