how do i hate webster hall? let me count the ways. . .
last night's bloc party show was a big let-down, even though my expectations had already lowered significantly since the day i bought my tickets, which feels like it was about ten years ago (damn constantly sold-out indie rock shows!). the first time i saw bloc party was at the kemado party at south by southwest. they rocked. it was an awesome show, they sounded great, everybody loved it, etc.
last night's webster hall show, on the other hand, was frustrating and for the most part totally boring. i think the trouble began when they kicked off the show with a couple of slow songs, which wasn't really the way to get everyone worked up for the show—unless you were the group of drunken secretary-types to my left who were screaming and freaking out from minute one. thanks for stepping on everyone's feet and knocking everybody's drinks out of their hands, girls. i hope all the beer didn't stain your old navy capris.
but i digress. about three songs into their set they played 'banquet,' which got exactly the response you'd expect—yelling, dancing, a palpable feeling of excitement—but all that sort of evaporated once they moved on to other songs. 'modern love' was another highpoint, but aside from that, the show was kind of a wash. kele's voice sounded pretty terrible and no one could understand A WORD he was saying between songs. at first we were like 'oh those cheeky british lads with their blokes and bangers and incoherent anglobabble!', but then we remembered that we also couldn't understand a word that britt daniel was saying at the spoon show there last week. coincidence?
so yeah. not the best show ever. here are some pics. . .
this gentle giant (who was already blocking pretty much everyone's views of the stage) kept making even MORE of a nuisance of himself by taking pictures continuously throughout the show. luckily he left about halfway through, so the sun was finally unblocked.
surreptitious picture taken of the annoying secretaries.
boyfriend john found outside sitting on a dumpster wishing he'd gone to see fiddler on the roof instead.
you know one thing that IS good about seeing a show at webster hall? post-show dining at the rollin' roaster across the street. i highly recommend the fried chicken wings with hot garlic sauce. mm mm good!
haha. i was right behind the gentle giant. you can see my hair in the first pic. i'm not sure, but i think i saw you outside. i was wearing a blue shirt and talking on my cell phone.

Isn't it about time everyone gets over all these guys... it's really such a bore! I look forward to the day when Bloc Party goes the way of Franz Ferdinand - off everyone's playlist.
